Calling All Teachers

I have been thinking about going back to school for about a year now. The plan was to get my masters...but in what? I didn't know. Since I knew we were going to be in Florida for such a short period of time I knew I had time to think.

My original plan when I was completing my undergrad degree was to go back after a year or two and get a Masters of Business Administration. Oh by the way my degree is in Hospitality and Special Events Management. Basically with two very board degrees I figured I could do anything. Which is basically the truth. Except there's one tiny detail...I don't know what I want to do. HR struck my fancy but there is a lack of jobs in that area, seems kind of pointless to spend more money going back for that to not get a job.

Recently, I have been thinking about getting certified as a teacher. Elementary education (PreK-3) would be my preferred area. But I'm slightly lost as how one goes back to school for this. I think that I can enroll to get my masters in education. I will probably have to take a few undergrad classes that I didn't take before like history and maybe a little more math. Don't start thinking that I am going into this blindly, I will do more research but I just want to know if anyone knows first hand how this works? After we move I will start looking at local colleges and see what they have to offer in detail. This is just a little spark right now. When I get excited about something I tend to dive right in!

In other news, I went by Fleet and Family Services today and picked up our moving packet. I feel like I am the most uninformed military wife out there so I am stepping up my game. I'm going to attend a Smooth Move Workshop next Wednesday. Not that our first move didn't go well but I just want to cover all my bases. Hopefully when I get there other wives will feel the same way I do!

  1. Good luck with your smooth move class!
I'm also a teacher however I did my undergraduate in teaching. In KY you can't just get a masters in teaching. I think you would have to complete the whole undergrad program. Except for classes you have already had like gen ed. Hopefully it will be different where ever you move. If you decide to become a teacher I think it will be an awesome decison. It's so rewarding and... you are off all summer!

  2. I have a BA in English/ Early childhood education. I am certified to teach up to 3rd grade. If those are the grades that interest you, most schools have that fall under "Early childhood". El Ed is usually Kindergarten to 5 or 6th grade.

I think you would just need to find a school that does Early Childhood as a Masters program. A lot of schools do not have it.

Hope I helped. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. I feel the same way about being an uninformed military wife. We live an hour from base so I really rely on my husband to get me all the info. Once move comes around again, Ill have to step up my game!

  4. I'm in MD and currently working on my Masters in Teaching, with a concentration in Elementary Education. The Masters is Teaching is for college grads with no formal teaching experience, and I did have to take 5 undergraduate prerequisites (math and science, ew). At my school, there are one and two year programs. I would suggest looking for a degree in the state you want to teach, because the requirements vary from state to state and it's easier to just start where you want to teach. My e-mail is on my blog if you have any specific questions I didn't answer! :)

  5. Hey, I'm a elementary teacher in Mississippi. It is very easy to get a teaching license here. You just have to have any bachelor's degree, pass Praxis 1 and 2, and take some graduate level classes. You have the option of getting a "Masters of the Art of Teaching" Caroline from Pink Champagne recently did it Texas. You're probably not going to be able to do lower grades though, unfortunately. They usually only do 4th and up.

  7. Christine- Thanks so much for your comment. So, so, sad.

I clicked over and wanted to offer an option. You may want to google "career switch program". I've included a link that has details in VA, but you may be able to find something in your new home as well. http://scs.richmond.edu/explore.html. Funny that you said you thought about HR- I started teaching and switched to HR.....

    Good luck!

  8. I have no idea about enrolling for a master's in education. I have my bachelor's in it. I do know that when I was going through the teaching program that there were quite a few people doing their post-bac's in education. All I can say is that every state does something a little bit different when it comes to teaching degrees and being certified.

    I teach first grade and I LOVE it! I'm certified k - 8.
    Good luck! =)

  9. thanks for visiting my blog. I'm a teacher (but certified 7-12). Let me know if you have any questions. I'll try to help.
I'm not sure if the process for certification in VA is different from where I'm from. I can say that teaching is definately a rewarding and fun career!
